Soccer

Regis Soccer is comprised of both Junior Varsity and Varsity teams. Tryouts for both teams begin the third Monday in August and continue through the start of school. The regular season begins the first week of classes and concludes with playoffs in early November. Each team plays in the highest classification in New York, participating in the CHSAA “AA” Division. The team plays weekday league matches as well as non-league matches on weekends against opponents throughout the tristate area. Practices and games for both teams are held on various fields throughout Randall’s Island.

The Varsity soccer team captured the 2002 CHSAA New York Archdiocesan Championship and were the runner-up in the CHSAA “AA” division. The team also made its way to the CHSAA State Semi-Finals.

The 2009 Varsity team made it to the CHSAA Intersectional Semifinals for the 2nd straight year while the Junior Varsity team made it to the CHSAA Intersectional Final. The 2016 Junior Varsity squad made it to the Intersectional Semifinals while the Varsity team advanced to the Intersectional final losing in penalty kicks.

The 2017 Varsity team captured its first Archdiocesan Championship since 2002 on its way to winning the first soccer Intersectional Championship in the school history as well as the first championship of any sport in the “AA” classification. The team advanced to the State Catholic final where it lost in heartbreaking fashion in overtime to the three-time defending champions. The team finished the season ranked #2 in New York City among all public, private, and Catholic schools as well as ranked #46 in the country by USA Today and the United Soccer Coaches Association. Three players were chosen to represent the team in the NYC Mayor’s Cup team with one being named team captain and another capturing game MVP honors. Senior Eric Schemitsch was named NYC Player of the Year—a first in Regis history.

The 2018 Varsity team repeated as Archdiocesan and Intersectional champions, but for the second year in a row fell just short in the state championship game.

The program has had several players go on to play at the intercollegiate level representing Dartmouth, Marist, Oberlin, and Cooper Union.
