Social Justice

One of the five characteristics of the Regis Graduate at Graduation is being Committed to Doing Justice. Through classwork and extracurriculars, Regians grapple with the needs of their communities and the greater world. Students develop their awareness and the skills necessary to live as people for and with others.

Senior Seminars

Students attending a service

All seniors participate in our Social Justice Seminars, a guest lecture series each Wednesday afternoon during the third trimester. Along with the Dominican Academy senior class, Regians listen to a talk on a different social justice topic each week presented by local and national organizations. They follow up with small-group discussion to reflect on Catholic Social Teaching and think about how they will address issues of justice and promote peace.

Social Justice Immersion Trips

Students on a retreat

As part of the school’s mission to inspire “leadership, generosity, and a lifelong passion for service,” Regis provides several overnight opportunities aimed to complement the educational experience. Students will be able to learn from experts, confront injustice, and consider how to better stand in solidarity with our world.

Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice

Students engaging in peer ministry

Each fall, a group of Regians travels to Washington, D.C., to attend the Ignatian Family Teach-in for Justice. This annual gathering has a rich history rooted in honoring the Jesuits and their companions who were martyred in El Salvador in 1989. It has grown into a 5,000-person, multi-day conference dedicated to issues of social justice, promoting radical love and solidarity among Ignatian and other institutions, including many high schools and colleges.

Arrupe Leaders Summit

Faculty and staff attending a program

The Arrupe Leaders Summit brings together a few dozen students from Jesuit high schools in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. Emerging leaders from the junior class deepen their understanding of a “faith that does justice,” share ideas and resources for social justice programming, and become empowered to effect positive change in their communities. The summit takes place at the beginning of February break in Sparks, Maryland.

John Francis Regis Day

Parents attending a school event

This annual day celebrates our patron saint by educating the Regis community on an issue of social justice. The theme, which changes each year, is a topic of great relevance to our school, local, and global communities. Students will hear from speakers and engage with community leaders on the selected topic.

Social Justice in Action

Parents attending a school event

In their third trimester, seniors have the option of partaking in Social Justice in Action. Working individually or in small groups, students combine the community engagement of service and the creativity and flexibility of an independent study to research a social justice topic of their choosing. Students develop a project that would create a positive change in vulnerable communities and are encouraged to challenge current systems of thinking as they collaboratively address larger social justice issues. The program includes an online Catholic Social Teaching course through the University of Notre Dame.
