Varsity Tennis Wins First City Championship in School History

Regis’s varsity tennis team won the CHSAA city championship on Tuesday, capturing the title for the first time in school history. With students and faculty members cheering them on, the top-seeded Raiders defeated second seed Fordham Prep 4-1 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens.

In singles action, Calvin Gonzalez ’26 and Roshan Duggal ’28 both won in straight sets. Meanwhile, both doubles matches went to 10-point tiebreakers. Gabe Troiano ’27 and Lucas Jimenez-Chavez ’28 won their tiebreaker 10-3, while Alex Lorenzo '26 and Rémy Picciano '27 won their tiebreaker 10-6. Lucas Ciordas '27 also put forward a strong effort in a tight singles match.

"All season long, our theme has been, “How can we access our best tennis?" said math teacher and coach Mr. Brendan MacDonnell P'16'20. "On Tuesday afternoon, every single player rose to the occasion, and against a very strong Fordham Prep team, they played some of their best tennis of the season."
