History

The History Department's program of studies consists of a required three-year sequence as well as fourth-year elective opportunities.

The freshman year curriculum focuses on Ancient Greece, Rome, and Persia moving through Medieval Europe and the Islamic empires; in the spring, students study the origins of the modern Middle East. In sophomore year, students study American History, supplemented by the American Studies Program, which provides the student with the opportunity to integrate various aspects of American culture into their historical studies. In junior year, students survey the history of Europe from 1350 to the modern era, while they also engage in individualized research and writing. In senior year, students can elect to take courses in a variety of subjects, ranging from The Cold War to The History of Japan.
