Track - Cross Country

Regis offers three seasons of the classic contests of speed, strength, and skill. Cross country takes place in the fall and focuses on distance running (1.5 mile course for freshman; 2.5 mile or 5K for JV and Varsity). Indoor Track in the winter and Outdoor Track in the spring feature running races from the 55m dash to the 2 mile distance run, as well as field events such as shot put, discus, hurdles, long jump, triple jump. Recently, athletes have even competed in the steeplechase (which includes a water pit) and the pentathlon, a grueling test of athleticism.

Cross country tryouts begin in August. The team practices in Central Park and competes in Van Cortlandt Park. The team occasionally travels to meets at Disney World, Six Flags Great Adventure, and McQuaid High School.

Indoor tryouts begin in late November. The team practices in Central Park and at the Armory, a world-class facility in Washington Heights. The team sometimes travels to Georgetown Prep for a winter meet there; the team also seeks to qualify for the Millrose Games each year, which feature pro runners, as well as the CHSAA 4x800 meter relay.

Outdoor tryouts begin in early March. The team practices in Central Park and at Icahn Stadium, another world class facility in Manhattan, located on Randall’s Island. The team competes in the Penn Relays each year, as well as many competitive meets here in NYC.

All three seasons have three levels of competition: Freshman, JV, and Varsity.

In recent years, the Cross Country team has routinely qualified individuals for the State Championship Meet, won the Mayor’s Cup at the Freshman level in 2013, and took home a Sectional Championships at the Sophomore level in 2011 and at the Freshman level in 2012.

The Outdoor team claimed a City Championship in the Weight Division in 2012 and 2014. They also claimed a Sectional Championship in the Weight Divisions in 2011 and 2015. In 2016, Adriano Atallah made history by becoming the first Regis student-athlete to complete the grueling decathlon, in addition to giving stellar performances in the pentathlon.

The Indoor team has qualified for the Millrose Games CHSAA 4 x 800 in 2010 and 2014.

Athletes have gone on to compete at: Holy Cross, Davidson, Villanova, Washington and Lee, Fordham University, Cornell University, Harvard University and Loyola University of Maryland. Among these athletes, one holds the Cornell record in the 800, and another was named Rookie of the Year in his conference.
