Regis Hosts Annual Christmas Tree Lighting
Regis held its 24th annual Christmas tree lighting tonight, with students, family members, faculty, and staff in attendance to spread holiday cheer and see the tree light up the Quad for the first time this Christmas season. More than 650 people registered for this year's event, with attendees gathering in the Quad as well as the library overlooking it.
This year's tree was selected by members of Regis's Student Government, and all students were encouraged to donate an ornament to help decorate it. This year, the Owl mascot was invited to flip the switch to light the tree as the Regis community gathered by candlelight to watch and sing Christmas carols.
The evening began with prayers and readings in the auditorium. Regis students in the Glee Club and Jazz Club performed under the direction of Mr. Jacob Elkin alongside singers from Marymount.
Before the tree was lit, President Rev. Christopher Devron, SJ, offered a blessing and sprinkled the tree with holy water.
"Lord God, let your blessing come down upon this tree as we illuminate it," said Fr. Devron. "May the light and cheer it gives be a sign of the joy that fills our hearts, and may all who delight in this tree come to the knowledge and the hope of salvation."
After the ceremony, guests enjoyed hot chocolate and desserts in the cafeteria and lower gym.
